Ellen Pober Rittberg saw a gap in the literature of caregiving and has filled it with a humorous and wise entry about her experiences with her aging mother. Taking care of aging parents is hard work, and it can be grim, but that isn’t the whole story in her book, Why is Grandma Naked? Caring for Your Aging Parent, published in 2021.From the loss of driving privileges to the discomforts of incontinence, Rittberg shows us how she worked to keep her mother’s dignity by being unafraid to make the tough calls and do the hard things, learning that a smile can be a useful tool. The author is the first to admit she might be wrong: “[Y]ou should listen to that professional. (To put it bluntly: they’re right and you’re wrong.)” [Italics, author’s, p. 43] She addresses the basics of self-care because, “in the beginning, you won’t realize how time-intensive and emotionally-intensive caregiving is.” Rittberg explores and accepts the dilemma of incessant repetition that often accompanies dementia, reminding us that in some cultures, “it is considered the norm to listen to older people’s repetitions.” [p.81]; however, she notes wryly, “such stories are interesting only if they are repeated no more than two times.”Rittberg has professional experience as an attorney who has worked on the legal side of eldercare, but she cheerfully admits she had more to learn from this rewarding experience of doing this special work for her own mom. The book is not a legal manual, but a layperson’s memoir of coping in a challenging circumstance. No stranger to reflecting on family life, Rittberg, an award-winning journalist who hosted the television show, “The Changing Family,” has also authored 35 Things Your Teen Won’t Tell You, So I Will (Good Things to Know)(2010).The lovely thing about Rittberg’s story is that both she and her Mom celebrate their love of one another even as they charge into the challenges of late-in-life care. Without humor, these can create a grim task indeed. There’s a lot to learn! Ellen does not make light of the burden, but she does remind us that humor can help sustain the love.
